Omeletes in a bag

My aunt Cathie showed us this fun camping meal at a family reunion camping trip this summer and we had them for our breakfast last Saturday while camping at the Three Island Crossing State Park. I love it because it is EASY to clean up and fun for everyone.

  • 1 Heavy Duty ziploc bag for each person (we used quart sized freezer bags-cheaper bags would potentially melt in the hot water or touching the hot pan)
  • eggs (1+ for each bag/person)
  • fun ingredients! (we had cheese, sausage, cubed ham, green onion, tomato, salsa - pretty much anything you want in your omelet)
Initial or label your bag in some way. Crack eggs straight into your bag, add your fun ingredients and zip it closed - pushing out all the air. Use your fingers to mush the egg yolks and ingredients- mix well! Place in pan of boiling water (use a big pan if cooking a lot of bags, so they stay away from the sides as much as possible) and let cook for 10-15 minutes depending on the size of your omelet. To check for doneness, carefully pull out of the water and turn upside down. If it is runny, then cook some more! Clean up is easy - just throw the baggies away! (We also brought all the ingredients for the omlettes already cooked/cut up in baggies - so we could just trow them away too.)
